Earn an animal's trust
Select the correct offering, aim at the animal and right-click. Accepted offerings consume food in finite play. Some animals need several; trust succeeds by the fourth accepted offering. Initial taming food also restores health/stamina.
| Animal | Initial taming food | Useful behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Wolf | Bone | Follows, waits and defends against nearby hostile mobs. |
| Wild cat | Raw/cooked salmon or trout | Follows or waits. |
| Horse | Wheat or apple | Can wear a saddle and horse armor. |
Shift + right-click a tame wolf/cat to toggle waiting and following, without its food selected: food takes priority. Tame pets and saddled horses survive the ordinary wildlife despawn range, but can still be injured or killed.
Ride a horse
Earn trust first. Right-click with a saddle to fit it, then right-click again to mount. WASD steers, Space jumps, Ctrl/normal sprint input sprints, and Shift dismounts when there is clear supported space beside the horse. Watch the gold stamina bar; walk/rest after exhaustion. Fit leather, iron or steel horse armor by right-clicking a tame horse with the armor selected.
Breed supported animals
Right-click two nearby same-species adults with their breeding food. They must not be riding or on cooldown. Horses, wolves and cats must already be tame.
| Species | Breeding food |
|---|---|
| Sheep, cow, goat, horse | Wheat or apple |
| Pig, rabbit | Carrot or wild berries |
| Hen | Seeds or wheat |
| Tame wolf, tame cat | Supported raw/cooked meat and fish families |
The first feeding opens a 40-second breeding window. The pair search looks within ten blocks; adults must approach within about 2.4 blocks to produce a baby. Leave a walkable enclosure, since a wall can prevent an apparently close pair from meeting.
Successful parents have a 300-second cooldown. A baby grows over 600 active seconds; feeding it its breeding food shortens remaining growth by 45 seconds. Young animals follow a living parent when available, inherit one parent's coat and retain age through saving. These timers concern active local simulation, not guaranteed offscreen progress.
Wool, milk and eggs
Right-click a sheep with iron or steel shears to obtain three wool. Its 150-second regrowth countdown progresses while it stands on meadow/moss support; the game says it needs time and grass. Right-click a cow/goat with an empty bucket for milk, followed by a 45-second milking rest.
Living hens lay a physical hen egg every 60–120 active seconds, determined by their identity. Settlement livestock keepers can gather those eggs. Dead workers and animals do not keep producing goods.
Leads
Right-click an eligible non-hostile animal other than a witch with a leash. Right-click a fence/hitching post to tie it. Shift + right-click the post to untie, or the animal to detach/recover the lead. Leads pull through collision and can break if overstretched; they do not teleport animals through solid walls.
Keep a safe enclosure
Wild wolves hunt livestock. Foxes hunt hens/rabbits; wild cats favor rabbits. Bears hunt fish/hostiles and can climb bark to raid hives. Keep predators out and provide dry exits: floodwater can drown land animals, especially babies. Predators consume their kills and can leave no meat for you.
