BuildXDWIKIThe game

Your first survival day

Start with an empty inventory, make a building deck and tools, and establish food, water and a home.

Choose your kind of world

Choose Mortal for survival with hunger, thirst, hostile creatures and recoverable inventory drops after death. Stasis keeps finite gathering and crafting but removes hunger/thirst drain and hostile spawning. Creator provides the item library, infinite placement, fast mining and flight. Immortal is observation and flight through terrain, without building or inventory interaction.

A normal new world currently starts with an empty inventory. Some older guides describe starting logs and rations; those supplies belong to old versions or test fixtures. Create a fresh world for the latest terrain and natural habitats. Reopening an old world preserves its generation rather than rebuilding it around your edits.

From your first log to your first stone tool

  1. Find trees and hold left mouse on a trunk to mine it. You can begin by hand.
  2. Collect three logs. This is enough wood for a building deck, a wooden pickaxe and the necessary sticks, with a little left over.
  3. Press E. Put one log in the 2×2 hand grid, then take the four planks from its result. Repeat for your other logs.
  4. Arrange four planks as a 2×2 square and take the building deck. Close inventory, select it on your hotbar, aim at supported ground and right-click to place it.
  5. Put two planks vertically in a grid to make four sticks.
  6. Right-click the placed deck to open its 3×3 grid. Put three planks across the top, with a stick in the middle of each row below, to make a wooden pickaxe.
  7. Mine stone. Natural stone drops cobble. Three cobble in the same pickaxe pattern plus two sticks makes a stone pickaxe.
  8. Mine eight more cobble. Arrange them around the edge of a 3×3 grid, leaving the center empty, to make a kiln.

The extended library can arrange a recipe for you, but in Mortal and Stasis it uses your actual ingredients. It does not create missing materials. Take the result from the grid to finish the craft.

Establish the basics

Find nearby water. Aim at the surface and hold R, or hold right mouse without a conflicting context action or empty bucket selected, to drink. A filled wooden water bucket is portable drinking water. Iron and steel water buckets are for carrying and placing water rather than drinking it. Milk buckets remain drinkable.

Find food before taking a long journey. Hunting yields species-specific meat, fishing catches actual fish, fruit and berries grow in the world, and crops support a renewable supply. Put raw food in a fueled kiln to cook it. Hold right mouse to eat the selected food; R is an alternative.

Build a modest shelter and a place for a kiln and storage. Light it with torches, amberlights or fueled lanterns. Exposed torches and open fires can be extinguished by rain, so a roof matters.

A wool bed sets a saved home point when there is safe space beside it. A hay bed lets you rest but does not bind your respawn. At night, using a bed begins a short physical sleep transition to dawn. Leave supported, unobstructed standing space beside the bed.

A useful early checklist

  • Building deck, stone pickaxe and kiln.
  • Food and a reliable water source.
  • Spare sticks, wood and fuel.
  • Shelter, light and a wool bed.
  • A wooden chest for materials you do not need to carry.
  • A route back home that you recognize.

The game simulates what is nearby and loaded. There is no need to rush into a complex automated build on your first day; a working kiln, a crop patch and secure storage are a useful foundation.
