Start a field
- Craft a hoe and select it.
- Right-click grass or earth with clear air above it to create farmland.
- Right-click that farmland with the correct seed or planting item.
- Leave air above the plant and give it open sky and nearby water.
- Wait for maturity, then mine the crop to harvest and replant.
| Planting item | Crop | Mature harvest |
|---|---|---|
| Wheat seeds | Wheat | Wheat and wheat seeds |
| Flax seeds | Flax | Plant fiber and flax seeds |
| Carrot seeds | Carrots | Carrot and carrot seeds |
| Potato | Potatoes | Potatoes for food and replanting |
| Beetroot seeds | Beetroot | Beetroot and beetroot seeds |
Breaking grass can drop wheat seeds. Wild flax supplies fiber and seeds. One carrot crafts into two carrot seeds; one beetroot crafts into two beetroot seeds. Keep some seed stock in storage instead of eating or processing all of a harvest.
Water and sky
The crop check looks for water within four blocks in both horizontal directions, at the soil level beneath the crop. A simple practical field puts a water cell in the same layer as the farmland and grows crops around it under open sky.
Open sky with nearby water gives the full growth rate. Open sky without water grows at one quarter speed. Shaded crops grow at one twentieth speed. Maturity requires a little over 90 accumulated growth seconds, so a watered outdoor field matures in about a minute and a half of active local simulation. A dry outdoor field takes about four times as long, and a shaded field much longer.
These are simulated, loaded-world timings. A world closed to the title or unloaded area is not an offline crop timer. Ordinary open menus do not stop growth. Flax uses its age to determine when its seed bonus is available rather than changing to a different mature block.
Fruit and berries
Right-click a berry bush, apple leaves or pear leaves to harvest without cutting down the whole plant. A berry bush yields three berries; apple and pear leaves yield two fruits. The harvested block returns after roughly 150 active seconds. Leave the plant in place for renewal.
Mushroom caps can be gathered for cooking and other recipes. Trees can drop resin when logs are mined. Watch for useful natural materials while gathering building wood.
Make the harvest useful
Wheat becomes bread, hay or fishing bait. Flax provides fiber for tools, leashes and advanced crafting. Potatoes cook into baked potatoes. Beetroot and fruit provide food and some hydration. Excess produce can support trades or animal care.
Settlement farms are part of a resident economy and property system. Taking someone else's goods can cause a crime response; build your own field when you want an independent supply.
