Make a sign
A sign recipe uses six planks across two rows with one stick below the center, yielding three signs. Select a sign, aim at a solid floor or side wall and right-click. The writing editor opens after placement. Shift-right-click places against interactive blocks when ordinary use would open them instead.
Right-click an existing sign to edit its text. Signs support a compact four-line message: up to 20 characters per line, with an overall 96-character storage cap. Current text entry accepts printable ASCII, spaces and newlines. A ceiling is not a valid sign support.
Make a book and writing tools
| Craft | Ingredients | Yield |
|---|---|---|
| Paper | Three plant fiber in a row | Six paper |
| Blank book | Three paper and one leather in a 2×2 arrangement | One book |
| Ink | One charcoal beside one wild berry | Two ink |
| Quill and ink | One feather beside one ink | One writing tool |
Right-click a blank book to open it. In Mortal and Stasis, keep a quill and ink in your inventory to write. It is a required tool, rather than a separate account or online editor.
Use the editor
Type on the current page. Enter starts a line and Backspace removes the last character. Page Up/Page Down changes page, Tab switches to the title field, and Escape/Done closes the editor. Books support up to 16 pages, with a 48-character title and at most 1,024 stored characters per page; visible page layout is also limited to 54 columns and 15 rows.
Signing changes a blank book into a written book. A written book opens read-only; signing is the way to finish a work rather than continuing to edit it. Written content is saved with its identity, including when the item is transferred or dropped.
Signs suit machine labels, directions and short instructions. Books suit longer recipes, expedition notes and stories. Neither feature sends text to an external service.
