Melee
Hold left mouse to attack an aimed creature in reach. An empty hand deals a base two damage. Tools also have attack values, while spears and blades are intended for melee use. Wooden, stone, iron and steel spear/blade grades deal base 4, 5.7, 7.4 and 9.1 damage before a target's defenses or other encounter rules. The tide trident deals six, and the scythe seven.
A tool's remaining durability follows it through inventory and saves. Striking consumes durability in finite modes. Animals and residents can react to attacks; Creator immunity is not a reason to expect the same behavior when you return to Mortal.
Bows and crossbows
With a bow selected, hold right mouse to draw, then release to fire. A very short draw is cancelled. Drawing longer raises projectile speed up to the charge limit. A crossbow fires on right-click. Arrows must be in your inventory in Mortal and Stasis; the weapon also wears.
Craft arrows from one cobble, one stick and one feather arranged vertically. The recipe yields eight arrows. Shields and terrain can affect an encounter, so leave yourself room to aim and move.
Armor outfits
Armor is currently a complete outfit in one equipment slot, not a separate helmet/chest/legs/boots system. Right-click a selected outfit or use the inventory armor slot to equip it. The previous outfit is exchanged rather than erased.
| Outfit | Damage reduction | Durability |
|---|---|---|
| Leather | 15% | 160 |
| Iron | 35% | 400 |
| Steel | 48% | 850 |
| Kevlar | 58% | 1,100 |
| Graphene | 68% | 1,500 |
Damage wears the outfit by one durability per damaging event. When it reaches zero, the outfit breaks. Material protection is applied to damage; it does not make you immune to drowning, falls or attacks.
Round shields
Hold right mouse with a shield selected and face the source of damage. A shield protects the front, not your back. Blocking consumes shield durability, and any armor reduction is applied to the remaining damage.
| Shield | Incoming damage left after the shield | Durability |
|---|---|---|
| Leather | 35% | 140 |
| Iron | 25% | 380 |
| Steel | 18% | 800 |
| Kevlar | 15% | 1,050 |
| Graphene | 10% | 1,400 |
Active shield use currently stays on the main hand. The offhand is passive carrying and crystal support rather than a second independently usable weapon slot.
Pick encounters carefully
Prepare food, water and an escape route. Keep a spare tool and safe bed at home. Residents and guards have a law/property system; fighting a settlement can have consequences beyond the first target. Some creature encounters have special rules such as siren holds or bee retaliation; consult those creature entries rather than relying on generic combat damage alone.
