Homes, beds and storage

Set a safe home, grow your storage and use doors, stairs and partial blocks.

A home that survives the night

Build a supported, enclosed room with enough standing headroom. Put your kiln and crafting station where you can aim at them, and keep storage near your working area. Doors open physically and change collision; holding a placement item does not bypass a closed door.

Torches attach to floors or walls and fall if their support is removed. Exposed torches and campfires can go out in rain. A fueled coal lantern is a separate refillable light source, while electrical circuit lamps need a working coal circuit. See machinery for their exact setup.

Beds and respawning

A wool bed uses three wool above three planks. A hay bed uses three hay bales above three planks; each hay bale uses four wheat in a square.

Beds need two clear, supported blocks when placed. Right-click a bed with safe standing space beside it. A wool bed sets your saved home point. A hay bed only provides rest. During night, bed use starts an approximately eight-second sleep transition and advances to dawn when it completes. Escape wakes you.

A removed wool bed or obstructed home position invalidates that respawn and sends you back to the original spawn. Leave an open supported cell beside the bed, and avoid storing blocks in that escape space.

Storage progression

Container Slots Recipe idea
Wooden chest 27 Eight planks around an empty center
Stone chest 36 Wooden chest surrounded by eight cobble
Iron vault 45 Stone chest surrounded by eight iron ingots
Steel vault 54 Iron vault surrounded by eight steel ingots

These upgrades use the previous container as a crafting ingredient. Empty it before mining and using the item in a recipe; do not treat a storage upgrade as an in-place capacity button. Right-click a placed container to open it and Shift-click to transfer between it and inventory.

Doors and latches

Doors are two-block leaves with directional placement. Right-click to open or close. Shift-right-click lets you place another object against an interactive block instead of activating it. An inside door latch is worked from the inside side; use L when aiming at the door. The latch consumes a real crafted item in finite modes.

Fences, fence gates, palisades, ramparts, iron bars and settlement gates offer additional boundary materials. Property owned by a settlement is not free workshop material; interference can trigger guards.

Stairs and slabs

Sixteen materials have stair and slab families: oak planks, cobble, stone tiles, brick, pine planks, stone, limestone brick, redstone brick, dark slate, marble, iron, steel, gold, copper, titanium and glass. Stairs have directional placement and partial collision. Slabs use half-height collision, allowing a half-step to be walked up when there is headroom.

Use the exact named material recipe in the library. Six arranged blocks in a stepped 3×3 pattern yield four stairs; three matching blocks in a row yield six slabs.
